Phytoplankton concentration is generally quantified throughactivemeasurementofchlorophyllfluorescence.Inthisstudy,lightabsorptioncoefficient(K0.75)wasusedasan indicatorofphytoplanktonconcentration.Thismeasurement,easytoobtainandrequiringlowelectricpower,allowsfor assessingofthefinescalehorizontalstructuringofphytoplankton.Aspartofthisstudy,Southernelephantseals(SES)were simultaneously equipped with a fluorometer and a light logger. Along the SES tracks, variations in K0.75 were strongly correlatedwithchlorophyll,aconcentrationmeasuredbythefluorometerwithintheeuphoticlayer.WithregardstoSES foragingbehaviour,bottomdepthoftheseal’sdivewashighlydependentonlightintensityat150m,indicatingthatthe verticaldistributionofSES’spreysuchasmyctophidsistightlyrelatedtolightlevel.Therefore,changeinphytoplankton concentrationmaynotonlyhaveadirecteffectonSES’spreyabundancebutmayalsodeterminetheirverticalaccessibility withlikelyconsequencesonSESforagingefficiency.
