Methods:Caseswerewomenwithasingleton,latestillbirth(≥28weeks’gestation)withoutcongenital abnormality,bornbetweenJuly2006andJune2009inAuckland,NewZealand.Twocontrolswithongoing pregnancieswererandomlyselectedatthesamegestationatwhichthestillbirthoccurred.Womenwere interviewedinthefirstfewweeksfollowingstillbirth,orattheequivalentgestationforcontrols.Detailed demographicdatawererecorded.Thestudywaspoweredtodetectanoddsratioof2,withapowerof80%at the5%levelofsignificance,givenaprevalenceoftheriskfactorof20%.Amultivariableregressionmodelwas developedwhichadjustedforknownriskfactorsforstillbirth,aswellassignificantriskfactorsidentifiedinthe currentstudy,andadjustedoddsratiosand95%confidenceintervalswerecalculated. Results:155/215(72%)casesand310/429(72%)controlsconsented.Pacificethnicity,overweightandobesity, grandmultiparity,notbeingmarried,notbeinginpaidwork,socialdeprivation,exposuretotobaccosmokeand useofrecreationaldrugswereassociatedwithanincreasedriskoflatestillbirthinunivariableanalysis.Maternal overweightandobesity,nulliparity,grandmultiparity,notbeingmarriedandnotbeinginpaidworkwere independentlyassociatedwithlatestillbirthinmultivariableanalysis,whereasPacificethnicitywasnolonger significant(adjustedOddsRatio0.99;0.51-1.91). Conclusions:PacificethnicitywasnotfoundtobeanindependentriskfactorforlatestillbirthinthisNewZealand study.ThedisparityinstillbirthratesbetweenPacificandEuropeanwomencanbeattributedtoconfounding f
