Methods:InvasionbySalmonellaentericasubspeciesentericaserovarTyphimurium(S.Typhimurium)strainandits isogencsdiAmutantwasstudiedusingaconventionalgentamycininvasionassaywithHEp-2cellsat37°C.Gene expressionwasstudiedusingasemi-quantitativePCR. Results:TheS.Typhimuriumstrain,butnotitsisogenicsdiAmutant,displayedincreasedinvitroinvasionafter additionofbothN-hexanoyl-DL-homoserinelactone(C6-AHL)andN-octanoyl-DL-homoserinelactone(C8-AHL). IncreasedexpressionoftwoofthegenesintheSdiAregulon(rckandsrgE)wasobservedinthewildtypestrain, butnotinthesdiAmutant. Conclusions:TheresultsfromthepresentstudyshowthatS.TyphimuriumcanrespondtotwodifferentAHL quorumsensingsignals(C6-AHLandC8-AHL)withincreasedcellinvasionat37°Cinvitro,andthatthisresponse mostlikelyissdiAmediated.TheseresultsindicatethatifAHLsarepresentintheintestinalenvironment,theymay increasetheinvasivenessofSalmonella.
