Participants searched for a moving target defined by its known shape among moving distractors, while continuously movingthecomputermousewithonehand.Theytherebycontrolledthemotionofoneitem,whichwasrandomlyeither thetargetoranyofthedistractors,whiletheotheritemsfollowedpre-recordedmotionpathways.Performancewasmore accurateandlesspronetodegradationassetsizeincreasedwhenthetargetwastheself-controlleditem.Anadditional experimentconfirmedthatparticipant-controlledmotionwasnotphysicallymoresalientthanmotionrecordedoffline.We foundnoevidencethatself-controlleditemscapturedattention.Takentogether,theseresultssuggestthatvisualeventsare perceivedmoreaccuratelywhentheyaretheconsequencesofouractions,evenwhenself-motionistaskirrelevant.
