SerialPositionLearninginHoneybees RandolfMenzel* InstituteBiology,Neurobiology,FreieUniversita¨t Berlin,Berlin,Germany Abstract Learning ofstimulus sequences is consideredas acharacteristic featureofepisodic memorysince itcontains notonlya particularitembutalsotheexperienceofprecedingandfollowingevents.Insensorimotortasksresemblingnavigational performance,theserialorderofobjectsisintimatelyconnectedwithspatialorder.Mammalsandbirdsdevelopepisodic(- like)memoryinserialspatio-temporaltasks,andthehoneybeelearnsspatio-temporalorderwhennavigatingbetweenthe nest and a food source. Here I examine the structure of the bees’ memory for a combined spatio-temporal task. I ask whetherdiscriminationandgeneralizationarebasedsolelyonsimpleformsofstimulus-rewardlearningorwhetherthey requiresequentialconfigurations.AnimalsweretrainedtoflyeitherleftorrightinacontinuousT-maze.Thecorrectchoice wassignaledbythesequenceofcolors(blue,yellow)atfourpositionsintheaccessarm.Ifonlyoneofthepossible4signals isshown(eitherblueoryellow),therankorderofpositionsalienceis1,2and3(numberedfromT-junction).Nolearningis foundifthesignalappearsatposition4.Iftwosignalsareshown,differencesatpositions1and2arelearnedbest,thoseat position3atalowlevel,andthoseatposition4notatall.Ifthreeormoresignalsareshowntheseresultsarecorroborated. Thissaliencerankorderagainappearedintransfertests,butadditionalconfiguralphenomenaemerged.Mostoftheresults canbeexplainedwithasimplemodelbasedontheassumptionthatthefourpositionsareequippedwithdifferentsalience scoresandthattheseaddupindependently.However,deviationsfromthemodelareinterpretedbyassumingstimulus configurationofsequentialpatterns.Itisconcludedthat,undertheconditionschosen,beesrelymoststronglyonmemories developedduringsimpleformsofassociativerewardlearning,butmemoriesofconfiguralserialpatternscontribute,too.
