Aging is associated with a reduction of the overall heart rate variability (HRV) and a decreaseofcomplexityofautonomiccardiacregulation.TheaimofourstudywastoevaluatetheHRVcomplexityusing twoentropy-derivedmeasures,ShannonEntropy(SE)andCorrectedConditionalEntropy(CCE),duringsleepinyoungand oldersubjects. Methods:Apolysomnographicstudywasperformedin12healthyyoung(21.160.8years)and12healthyoldersubjects (64.961.9years).Afterthesleepscoring,heartperiodtimeseriesweredividedintowake(W),Stage1–2(S1-2),Stage3–4 (S3-4)andREM.Twocomplexityindexeswereassessed:SE(3)measuringthecomplexityofadistributionof3-beatpatterns (SE(3)ishigherwhenallthepatternsareidenticallydistributedanditislowerwhensomepatternsaremorelikely)and CCEmin measuringtheminimumamountofinformationthatcannotbederivedfromtheknowledgeofpreviousvalues. Results:Acrossthedifferentsleepstages,youngsubjectshadsimilarRRinterval,totalvariance,SE(3)andCCEmin.Inthe oldergroup,SE(3)andCCEminwerereducedduringREMsleepcomparedtoS1-2,S3-4andW.Comparedtoyoungsubjects, during W and sleep the older subjects showed a lower RR interval and reduced total variance as well as a significant reductionofSE(3)andCCEmin.ThisdecreaseofentropymeasureswasmoreevidentduringREMsleep.
