Methods:Weconductedapopulation-basedcase-controlstudyofNHLinfourNationalCancerInstitute(NCI)- Surveillance,Epidemiology,andEndResults(SEER)centers:Detroit,Iowa,LosAngeles,andSeattleduring1998-2000. Using20-yearresidentialhistories,weusedgeneralizedadditivemodelsadjustedforknownriskfactorstomodel spatiallytheprobabilitythatanindividualhadNHLandtoidentifyclustersofelevatedordecreasedNHLrisk.We evaluatedmodelsatfivedifferenttimeperiodstoexplorethepresenceofclustersinatimeframeofetiologic relevance. Results:Thebestmodelfitwasforresidentiallocations20yearspriortodiagnosisinDetroit,Iowa,andLosAngeles. WefoundstatisticallysignificantareasofelevatedriskofNHLinthreeofthefourstudyareas(Detroit,Iowa,andLos Angeles)atalagtimeof20years.ThetwoareasofsignificantlyelevatedriskintheLosAngelesstudyareawere detectedonlyatatimelagof20years.ClustersinDetroitandIowaweredetectedatseveraltimepoints. Conclusions:WefoundsignificantspatialclustersofNHLafterallowingfordiseaselatencyandresidentialmobility. Ourresultsshowtheimportanceofevaluatingresidentialhistorieswhenstudyingspatialpatternsofcancer.
