Albornosetal.BMCPlantBiology2012,12:207 /1471-2229/12/207 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess STproteins,anewfamilyofplanttandemrepeat proteinswithaDUF2775domainmainlyfoundin FabaceaeandAsteraceae LucíaAlbornos,IgnacioMartín,RebecaIglesias,TeresaJiménez,EmiliaLabradorandBertaDopico* Abstract Background:Manyproteinswithtandemrepeatsintheirsequencehavebeendescribedandclassifiedaccording tothelengthoftherepeats:I)Repeatsofshortoligopeptides(from2to20aminoacids),includingstructuralcell wallproteinsandarabinogalactanproteins.II)Repeatsthatrangeinlengthfrom20to40residues,including proteinswithawell-establishedthree-dimensionalstructureofteninvolvedinmediatingprotein-protein interactions.(III)Longerrepeatsintheorderof100aminoacidsthatconstitutestructurallyandfunctionally independentunits.HereweanalyseShooTspecific(ST)proteins,afamilyofproteinswithtandemrepeatsof unknownfunctionthatwerefirstfoundinLeguminosae,andtheirpossiblesimilaritiestootherproteinswith tandemrepeats. Results:STproteinsequenceswereonlyfoundindicotyledonousplants,limitedtoseveralplantfamilies,mainly theFabaceaeandtheAsteraceae.STmRNAsaccumulatemainlyintherootsandunderbioticinteractions.MostST proteinshaveoneorseveralDomain(s)ofUnknownFunction2775(DUF2775).AlldeducedSTproteinshavea signalpeptide,indicatingthattheseproteinsenterthesecretorypathway,andthematureproteinshavetandem repeatoligopeptidesthatshareahexapeptide(E/D)FEPRPfollowedby4partiallyconservedaminoacids,which coulddetermineaputativeN-glycosylationsignal,andafullyconservedtyrosine.Inaphylogenetictree,the sequencescladeaccordingtotaxonomicgroup.Apossibleinvolvementinsymbiosisandabioticstressaswellasin plantcellelongationissuggested,althoughdifferentSTscouldplaydifferentrolesinplantdevelopment. Conclusions:WedescribeanewfamilyofproteinscalledSTwhosepresenceislimitedtotheplantkingdom, specificallytoafewfamiliesofdicotyledonousplants.Theypresent20to40aminoacidtandemrepeatsequences withdifferentcharacteristics(signalpeptide,DUF2775domain,conservativerepeatr
