Hofheinzetal.EJNMMIResearch2011,1:23 /content/1/1/23 ORIGINAL RESEARCH OpenAccess Suitabilityofbilateralfilteringforedge-preserving noisereductioninPET FrankHofheinz1*,JensLangner1,BettinaBeuthien-Baumann1,2,LianeOehme2,J?rgSteinbach1,J?rgKotzerke1,2 andJ?rgvandenHoff1,2 Abstract Background:Toachieveanacceptablesignal-to-noiseratio(SNR)inPETimages,smoothingfilters(SF)areusually employedduringorafterimagereconstructionpreventingutilisationofthefullintrinsicresolutionofthe respectivescanner.QuitegenerallyGaussian-shapedmovingaveragefilters(MAF)areusedforthispurpose.A potentialalternativetoMAFisthegroupofso-calledbilateralfilters(BF)whichprovideacombinationofnoise reductionandedgepreservationthusminimisingresolutiondeteriorationoftheimages.Wehaveinvestigatedthe performanceofthisfiltertypewithrespecttoimprovementofSNR,influenceonspatialresolutionandfor derivationofSUVmax valuesintargetstructuresofvaryingsize. Methods:Dataoftenpatientswithheadandneckcancerwereevaluated.Thepatientshadbeeninvestigatedby routinewholebodyscans(ECATEXACTHR+,Siemens,Erlangen).Tomographicimageswerereconstructed(OSEM 6i/16s)usingaGaussianfilter(fullwidthhalfmaximum(FWHM):Γ0=4mm).Imagedatawerethenpost- processedwithaGaussianMAF(FWHM:ΓM =7mm)andaGaussianBF(spatialdomain:ΓS=9mm,intensity domain:ΓI=2.5SUV),respectively.ImageswereassessedregardingSNRaswellasspatialresolution.Thirty-four lesions(volumesofabout1-100mL)wereanalysedwithrespecttotheirSUVmax valuesintheoriginalaswellasin theMAFandBFfilteredimages. Results:WiththechosenfilterparametersbothfiltersimprovedSNRapproximatelybyafactoroftwoin comparisontotheoriginaldata.SpatialresolutionwassignificantlybetterintheBF-filteredimagesincomparison toMAF(MAF:9.5mm,BF:6.8mm).InMAF-filtereddata,theSUVmax waslowerby24.1±9.9%comparedtothe originaldataandshowedastrongsizedependency.IntheBF-filtereddata,theSUVmax waslowerby4.6±3.7% andnosizeeffectswereobserved.
