Rodby-BousquetandH?gglundBMCPediatrics2010,10:59 /1471-2431/10/59 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Useofmanualandpoweredwheelchairin childrenwithcerebralpalsy:across-sectional study ElisabetRodby-Bousquet1,2*,GunnarH?gglund1 Abstract Background:Mobilityisimportantforthecognitiveandpsychosocialdevelopmentofchildren.Almostonethird ofchildrenwithcerebralpalsy(CP)arenon-ambulant.Wheelchairscanprovideindependentmobility,allowing themtoexploretheirenvironment.Independentmobilityisvitalforactivityandparticipationandreducesthe dependenceoncaregivers.Thepurposeofthisstudywastodescribetheuseofmanualandpoweredwheelchair indoorsandoutdoorsinrelationtothedegreeofindependentwheelchairmobilityorneedforassistanceina totalpopulationofchildrenwithCP. Methods:Across-sectionalstudywasperformedincludingallchildrenaged3-18yearswithCPlivinginsouthern Swedenduring2008.DatawasextractedfromaregisterandhealthcareprogrammeforchildrenwithCP(CPUP). Therewereatotalof562children(326boys,236girls)intheregister.Informationonthechild’suseofmanual andpoweredwheelchairindoorsandoutdoorsandtheperformanceinself-propellingorneedforassistancewere analysedrelatedtoage,CPsubtypeandgrossmotorfunction. Results:Wheelchairsformobilityindoorswereusedby165(29%)ofthe562children;61usedwheelchairfor independentmobility(32usingmanualonly,12poweredonly,17both)and104werepushedbyanadult.For outdoormobilitywheelchairswereusedby228children(41%);66usedawheelchairforindependentmobility(18 usingmanualonly,36poweredonly,12both)and162werepushed.Theuseofwheelchairincreasedwithage andwasmostfrequentinthespasticbilateralanddyskineticsubtypes.Mostpoweredwheelchairswereoperated bychildrenatGMFCSlevelIV. Conclusion:InthistotalpopulationofchildrenwithCP,aged3-18years,29%usedawheelchairindoorsand41% outdoors.Amajorityusingmanualwheelchairsneededadultassistance(86%)whilepoweredwheelchairsprovided independentmobilityinmostcases(86%).Toachieveahighlevelofindependentmobility,bothmanualand poweredwheelchairsshouldbeconsideredatanearlyageforch
