Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoexaminetheindependentrelationbetweenaseriesofsingledisasterexperiences versustheindependentpredictivevalueofaaccumulationofdisasterexperiences,i.e.asumscoreofexperiences andsymptomsofdistressandpost-traumaticstressdisorder(PTSD). Methods:Survivorsofafireworksdisasterparticipatedinalongitudinalstudyandcompletedaquestionnairethree weeks(wave1),eighteenmonths(wave2)andfouryearspost-disaster(wave3).Tenyearspost-disaster(wave4) therespondentsconsistedofnativeDutchsurvivorsonly.Mainoutcomemeasuresweregeneraldistressand symptomsofPTSD. Results:Degreeofdisasterexposure(sumscore)andsomedisaster-relatedexperiences(suchashousedestroyed, injured,confusion)wererelatedtodistressatwaves2and3.Thisrelationwasmediatedbydistressatanearlier pointintime.Noneoftheindividualdisaster-relatedexperienceswasindependentlyrelatedtosymptomsof distress.TheassociationbetweenthedegreeofdisasterexposureandsymptomsofPTSDatwaves2and3wasstill statisticallysignificantaftercontrollingforsymptomsofdistressandPTSDatearlierpointintime.Thevariable ‘housedestroyed’wastheonlyfactorthatwasindependentlyrelatedtosymptomsofPTSDatwave2.Tenyears afterthedisaster,disasterexposurewasmediatedbysymptomsofPTSDatwaves2and3.Disasterexposurewas notindependentlyrelatedtosymptomsofPTSDtenyearspost-disaster. Conclusions:Until4yearsafterthedisaster,degreeofexposure(asumscore)wasariskfactorforPTSDsymptoms whilenoneoftheindividualdisasterexperiencescouldbeidentifiedasanindependentriskfactor.Tenyears post-disaster,disasterexposurewasnolongeranindependentriskfactorforsymptomsofPTSD.Sincesymptoms ofPTSDanddi
