Methods:Recruitmentof603singlemen,304singlewomen,and284adultswithdependentchildrenoccurredat homelesssheltersandmealprogramsinToronto,Canada.Informationwascollectedondemographic characteristicsandpatternsofdruguse.TheAddictionSeverityIndexwasusedtoassesswhetherparticipants sufferedfromdrugproblems.Associationsofdrugproblemswithphysicalandmentalhealthstatus(measuredby theSF-12scale)wereexaminedusingregressionanalyses. Results:Fortypercentofthestudysamplehaddrugproblemsinthelast30days.Theseindividualsweremore likelytobesinglemenandlesseducatedthanthosewithoutdrugproblems.Theywerealsomorelikelytohave becomehomelessatayoungerage(mean24.8vs.30.9years)andforalongerduration(mean4.8vs.2.9years). Marijuanaandcocainewerethemostfrequentlyuseddrugsinthepasttwoyears(40%and27%,respectively). Drugproblemswithinthelast30dayswereassociatedwithsignificantlypoorermentalhealthstatus(-4.9points, 95%CI-6.5to-3.2)butnotwithpoorerphysicalhealthstatus(-0.03points,95%CI-1.3to1.3)). Conclusions:DruguseiscommonamonghomelessindividualsinToronto.Currentdrugproblemsareassociated withpoorermentalhealthstatusbutnotwithpoorerphysicalhealthstatus.
