Methods:Thesubjectswere1,008preschoolchildren,selectedbystratifiedrandomclustersampling,inthe municipalityofPrishtina,capitalofKosovo.Datawerecollectedthroughclinicalexaminationandinterviews.Dmft datawererecordedaccordingtoWHOcriteria.Bacterialexamination(CRTbacteriatest)andplaquetestofGreene- Vermillionwereused. Results:Themeandmftofpreschoolchildrenwasfoundtobe5.8.TheprevalenceofECCwas17.36%,witha meandmftof11±3.6.StreptococcusmutansprevalenceinECCchildrenwas98%.Asignificantcorrelation betweendmftandSmutanscounts(≥105CFU/mLsaliva)wasdemonstrated.Acorrelationwasalsofound betweendailysweetsconsumptionanddmftinchildrenwithECC(P0.001).ComparingthedmftofECC childrenanddurationofbottlefeedingshowedastatisticalcorrelation(P0.001).Themeanplaquetestwas1.52. Noneoftheexaminedchildrenhadeverusedfluoride. Conclusion:TheprevalenceofECCwashighamongpreschoolchildreninthemunicipalityofKosovo.We recommendincreasingparents’knowledgeofproperfeedinghabitsandoralhealthpractices,andincreasing preschoolchildren’saccessibilitytodentalservices.
