Method:Athicknesscorrectionwasdevelopedandevaluatedusingafullyspecified two-componentsurrogatebreastmodel.Apreviouslydevelopedcalibration approachbasedoneffectiveradiationattenuationcoefficientmeasurementswas usedintheanalysis.Waterandoilwereusedtoconstructphantomstoreplicatethe deformablepropertiesofthebreast.Phantomsconsistingofmeasuredproportions ofwaterandoilwereusedtoestimatecalibrationerrorswithoutcorrection,evaluate thethicknesscorrection,andinvestigatethereproducibilityofthevariouscalibration representationsundercompressionthicknessvariations. Results:Theaveragethicknessuncertaintyduetocompressionpaddlewarpwas characterizedtowithin0.5mm.Therelativecalibrationerrorwasreducedto7% from48-68%withthecorrection.Thenormalizedeffectiveradiationattenuation coefficient(planar)representationwasreproducibleunderintra-samplecompression thicknessvariationscomparedwithcalibratedvolumemeasures. Conclusion:Incorporatingthisthicknesscorrectionintotherigidbreasttissue equivalentcalibrationmethodshouldimprovethecalibrationaccuracyof mammogramsforriskassessmentsusingthereproducibleplanarcalibrationmeasure.
