Aelfersetal.BMCPublicHealth2013,13:129 /1471-2458/13/129 STUDY PROTOCOL OpenAccess Effectivenessofaminimalpsychological interventiontoreducemildtomoderate depressionandchronicfatigueinaworking population:thedesignofarandomized controlledtrial EdAelfers1,2*,HansBosma1,IngeHoukes1andJacquesThMvanEijk1 Abstract Background:Inaworkingpopulation,commonmentalcomplaintslikedepressedmoodandchronicfatigueare highlyprevalentandoftenresultinfurtherdeteriorationofmentalhealthandconsequentlyabsencefromwork.In alargeoccupationalhealthsetting,wewillevaluatethe(cost-)effectivenessofaMinimalPsychologicalIntervention (MPI),inreducingsymptomsofdepressionandchronicfatigueinaworkingpopulation.TheMPIisalsoevaluated regardingitsappreciationbyworker,nurse,andoccupationalhealthphysician(processevaluation).Thetailor-made interventionisadministeredbynurses,whoaretrainedintheprinciplesofcognitivebehaviouraltherapyand self-management. Methods/design:ThepresentedWoPaCoMstudy(WorkParticipationofWorkerswithCommonMentalcomplaints) isatwo-armedrandomizedcontrolledtrial,comparingMPIwithusualcare.Atotalnumberof124workerssuffering from(chronic)mentalfatigueormildtomoderatedepressionwillbeincluded.Astratifiedandblockrandomization willbeapplied,stratifyingbycustomerorganisation,income,andgender,usingablocksizeoffour.Itwillincludea baselinemeasurementandsubsequentlyfollowupmeasurementsafter4,6and12months.Theprimaryoutcome measuresaresymptomsofeitherfatigue(usingtheChecklistIndividualStrength)and/ordepression(usingthe BeckDepressionInventory)andsecondaryoutcomemeasuresincludesicknessabsence,selfefficacy,costsand qualityoflife.Analysiswillincludebothunivariateandmultivariatetechniquesanddatawillbeanalysedaccording totheintentiontotreatprinciple. Discussion:Patientrecruitmentinanoccupationalsettingprovestobecomplicatedandtimeconsuming.Shift workforinstanceprovedtobeanobstacleformakingappointmentsforconsultationwiththenurse.Furthermore, economicdevelopmentsmighthavecreatedjobinsecuritywhichnegativelyinfluenc
