AsgariandMorakabatiDiagnosticPathology2011,6:61 /content/6/1/61 RESEARCH OpenAccess Estrogenreceptorbetaexpressioninprostate adenocarcinoma MojganAsgari1,2* andArmanMorakabati3 Abstract Background:Prostatecanceristhemostcommonlydiagnosedcancerinmenandthesecondleadingcauseof cancerdeathinmen.Estrogeninductionofcellproliferationisacrucialstepincarcinogenesisofgynecologic targettissues,andtherearemanystudiesrecentlydone,showingthatprostatecancergrowthisalsoinfluenced byestrogen.Thecharacterizationofestrogenreceptorbeta(ER-b)broughtnewinsightintothemechanisms underlyingestrogensignalling.Inthepresentstudy,weinvestigatedtheexpressionofestrogenreceptor-b(ER-b) inhumanprostatecancertissues. Methods:Weselected52paraffin-embeddedblocksofprostateneedlebiopsiesinacross-sectionalstudyto determinefrequencyandrateofER-bexpressionindifferentgradesofprostateadenocarcinomaaccordingto Gleasongradingsystem.ImmunohistochemicalstainingoftissuesectionsbymonoclonalantiER-bantibodywas performedusinganEnvisionmethodvisualisingsystem. Results:ER-bexpressionwasseenintumoralcellsofprostaticcarcinomainall29caseswithlowandintermediate tumors(100%)and19of23caseswithhighgradetumor(83%).MeanrateofER-bexpressioninlow intermediategradecancerswas68.41%(SD=25.63)whereashighgradecancersshowed49.48%rateof expression(SD=28.79). Conclusions:ER-bexpressionisreducedinhighgradeprostatecancerscomparedtolowintermediategrade ones(Pvalue0.027).
