Methods/design:Peoplewithadvancedcancerandtheircaregiverscompletedbi-monthlytelephoneinterviews overaperiodofupto18monthstoassessunmetneeds,anxietyanddepression,qualityoflife,satisfactionwith careandserviceutilisation.Theintervention,introducedafteratleasttwobaselinephoneinterviews,involveda) trainingmedical,nursingandalliedhealthprofessionalsateachrecruitmentsiteontheuseofthePalliativeCare NeedsAssessmentGuidelinesandtheNeedsAssessmentTool:ProgressiveDisease-Cancer(NAT:PD-C);b)health professionalscompletingtheNAT:PD-Cwithparticipatingpatientsapproximatelymonthlyfortherestofthestudy period.Changesinoutcomeswillbecomparedpre-andpost-intervention.
