Charityetal.ChiropracticManualTherapies2013,21:4 /content/21/1/4 CHIROPRACTIC MANUAL THERAPIES METHODOLOGY OpenAccess ExtendingICPC-2PLUSterminologytodevelopa classificationsystemspecificforthestudyof chiropracticencounters MelanieJCharity1,SimonDFrench1,2*,KirstyForsdike1,HelenaBritt3,BarbaraPolus4andJaneGunn1 Abstract Background:Typicallyalargeamountofinformationiscollectedduringhealthcareresearchandthisinformation needstobeorganisedinawaythatwillmakeitmanageableandtofacilitateclearreporting.TheChiropractic ObservationandAnalysisSTudy(COAST)wasacrosssectionalobservationalstudythatdescribedtheclinical practicesofchiropractorsinVictoria,Australia.TocodechiropracticencountersCOASTusedtheInternational ClassificationofPrimaryCare(ICPC-2)withthePLUSgeneralpracticeclinicalterminologytocodechiropractic encounters.Thispaperdescribestheprocessbywhichachiropractic-professionspecificterminologywas developedforuseinresearchbyexpandingthecurrentICPC-2PLUSsystem. Methods:ThecoderreferredtotheICPC-2PLUSsystemwhencodingchiropractorrecordedencounterdetails (reasonsforencounter,diagnoses/problemsandprocessesofcare).Thecoderusedrulesandconventionssupplied bytheFamilyMedicineResearchUnitattheUniversityofSydney,thedevelopersofthePLUSsystem.New chiropracticspecifictermsandcodeswerecreatedwhenarelevanttermwasnotavailableinICPC-2PLUS. Results:Informationwascollectedfrom52chiropractorswhodocumented4,464chiropractor-patientencounters. Duringthestudy,6,225reasonsforencounterand6,491diagnoses/problemsweredocumented,codedandanalysed; 169newchiropracticspecifictermswereaddedtotheICPC-2PLUSterminologylist.Mostnewtermswereallocatedto diagnoses/problems,withreasonsforencountergenerallywellcoveredintheoriginalICPC2PLUSterminology:3,074 ofthe6,491(47%)diagnoses/problemsand274ofthe6,225(4%)reasonsforencounterrecordedduringencounters werecodedtoanewterm.Twentyninenewterms(17%)representedchiropracticprocessesofcare. Conclusion:WhileexistingICPC-2PLUSterminologycouldnotfullyrepresentchiropracticpracti
