Methods:Thestudywascarriedoutusingtheglucosetolerancetest(GTT)performedat31±1.9dayspost partumduringnegativeenergybalance.Bloodsampleswereobtainedat-15,-5,5,10,20,30,40,50and60min relativetoinfusionof0.15g/kgBWglucoseandanalysedforglucose,insulin,triglycerides(TG),non-esterifiedfatty acids(NEFA),cholesterolandb-hydroxybutyrate(BHB).ApplyingtheMIXEDProcedurewiththeSASSystemthe basalconcentrationofcholesterol,andbasalconcentrationandconcentrationsatpost-infusiontimepointsfor othermetabolites,areaunderthecurve(AUC)forglucoseandinsulin,clearancerate(CR)forglucose,and maximumincreasefrombasalconcentrationforglucoseandinsulinwerecomparedbetweenbreeds. Results:TherewasabreedeffectonbloodNEFA(P0.05)andatimeeffectonallmetabolitesconcentration (P0.01).ThefollowingdifferenceswereobservedinEHcomparedtoER:lowerbloodinsulinconcentration5min afterglucoseinfusion(P0.05),higherglucoseconcentration20(P0.01)and30min(P0.05)afterinfusion, andhigherNEFAconcentrationbefore(P0.01)and5minafterinfusion(P0.05).BloodTGconcentrationinER remainedstable,whileinEHtherewasadecreasefromthebasalleveltothe40th minnadir(P0.01),followed byanincreasetothe60th minpostinfusion(P0.01). Conclusion:Ourresultsimplythatglucose-inducedchangesininsulinconcentrationandmetaboliteresponsesto insulindifferbetweenEHandERdairycows.
