Abstract Cough and expectoration are the most common symptoms of acute respiratory infection in infants. Expectorant and anti-cough for maintaining unobstructed airway are important treatment of acute respiratory infection in pediatrics. Squill not only has pharmacological effects on expectorant and anti-cough, but also on immune-enhancing, anti-inflammatory and anti-free radical action. Currently the medicine for expectorant and anti-cough rarely contains squill, and the clinicians are not familiar with squill in chemical constituents, pharmacological effects and its study progress. Authors are publishing a review on squill relevant literature from Medicine Database both in China and abroad.
