My main goal in collecting and studying these steles is to use them for reconstructing the social and cultural history of Daoist monasteries and their connections with the local society, power structure, and ritual life in Nanyang during the late imperial period. Another goal is to sort, compile, and ultimately publish for both the scholarly community and the reading public a full collection of the Daoist steles and inscriptions from Nanyang as material and historical evidence of the Daoist presence in the region. The majority of these steles are found in the local gazetteers, or collected from temple compounds, storages of the local museum, and rubbings in both public archives and private collections in Nanyang. Many more are yet to be tracked down, preserved, and reproduced for the public. The fieldwork and collection first began in the summer of 2004. I have since returned almost every summer to Nanyang to continue with the work of searching, locating, and reproducing the steles in the form of either digital photographs, or rubbings. Some of the following stele inscriptions have been collected and reproduced in local publications such as pre-Republican era gazetteers or recent publications. But most of them are not accessible to the outside world and contain many vexing errors in dates and content from past transcription, and require careful cross-verification and confirmation word-by-word against the original rubbings or the actual steles.
