During the winter of 1929–1930, a pandemic of human psittacosis (occurred in the United States and Europe. The disease was attributed to the importation of Green Amazon parrots from Argentina. Shortly afterwards, 174 cases of human psittacosis were reported from the Faroe Islands in the period from 1930 to 1938. The human death rate was 20% and was especially high (80%) in pregnant women.
