A bstract The requirem ents of ocean developm ent and antisubmarine warfare is them ain m otivation of sonar
technology study. The theoretical developm ent and ach ievem ents in the area of underwater acoustic physics and
underw ater acoustic engineeringma e sonar system m ore andm ore complete. The opportunities and the challenges
facing sonar technology in 21st century is described in this article. The hot topics of underwater acoustic signal
processing and the innovation problem s in sonar system design are also discussed.
