Society * PM021:Aspects of British Society and Culture Society is... PM021:Aspects of British Society and Culture * A society is any group of people living together in a group. Society is frequently taken to include entire national communities. For example, ‘British society’. Society can also be used to refer to groups of people with similar characteristics – for example, rural societies”. Society in the UK Society is made up of different institutions and structures. These are governed by clear procedures, cultural norms and regulations. Some of the important aspects of social, economic, and cultural life are governed through these institutions and structures. Some of these are top down, for example decisions made by governments. Some of the decisions made may be bottom up, such as social concerns informing official institutions. PM021:Aspects of British Society and Culture * The Family What is a family? Nuclear ‘traditional’ family – a social unit consisting of wife, husband, and dependent children. Seen as important for forging and ordering the ‘healthy society’. UK post WW2 - dominant expectations of family life.
