Computer technology in the 1990s opened a floodgate (闸门) of information. A lot of the information is available on the World Wide Web, the giant piece of the Internet that is made of “sites” run by individuals and companies. In 1993, there were just 130 websites. In 1999, there were more than 3.6 million, on nearly every topic.
With dozens of new websites popping up every day, the number of job opportunities for people with Web skills is growing quickly too. In the near future, says the Commerce Department, 60 percent of all US jobs will require technological skills.
That’s bad news for kids who don’t have access to computers at home or in the classroom. How will they gain computer skills? The good news: many new programs are under way to make sure that everyone has a fair shot at being part of the digital revolution.
Recently, America online, which brings the Internet to more people than any other company, announced a generous new program. AOL joined with several other groups to give millions of dollars in free computers, software, and technology tutoring to poor children. The $10 million program, PowerUp, will be offered in schools and community centers nationwide.
