The rules of comparison of adjectives and adverbs
The standard single syllable word and a few words that end with -er, -ow, are followed by -er, the highest level in the latter.
(1) monosyllable

(2) two syllable words
Such as: clever to cleverer, cleverest narrow to narrower, narrowest
A single syllable that ends in an unpronounceable e, which is at the top of the original, plus -r at the original level.
