英語畢業門檻與英語學習動機之研究 徐儷娜* 王佩玲* 摘　　要 本研究以問卷調查國立高雄應用科技大學384個四技一年級及二年級學生，由於英文畢業門檻的實施，在參加及準備英語檢定測驗的動機，以及學習英語的動機方面，是否有所提升。所得數據以敘述性及推論性統計方法計算，採取平均數、百分比，並進行獨立樣本t檢定，變異數分析，以及皮爾森相關係數分析。研究結果顯示由於畢業門檻的實施，學生參加英語檢定測驗的意願確有提高，但是在準備方面，卻缺乏持續性的努力，更對通過測驗期望太低而裹足不前，大大減損其動機。至於學習英語的動機，畢業門檻也有正面的影響，但是效果極為有限。此外，學生一般同意實施畢業門檻，但是大都不願意參加校外的英語檢定測驗。雖然多數學生認同英語對其升學就業的重要性，其學習英語花費的時間卻極為不足。本研究也發現，女生、商管學院學生、以及大一學生顯示有較強的動機參加及準備英語檢定測驗﹔女生也比男生因畢業門檻而有較強的動機學習英語﹔學生的學習動機更與其成績高低成正比。總之，畢業門檻對英語程度較佳的學生顯然較有激勵作用。 關鍵字︰畢業門檻，動機，英語能力檢定測驗。 1. Introduction Since Taiwan joined WTO in 2003, English as an international language has received increasing attention from the government and the people on the island. The government has made it a policy to promote the learning of the language at school and in the society. For example, it extended the time of English learning from three to seven years in the compulsory education. In the past, students learned English at junior high school (the 7th grade). In 2001, however, 95% of children started to have English classes at the third grade of the elementary school. Another measure that shows the government’s stress on learning English is the development of GEPT (General English Proficiency Test). Sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the test was developed in 2000, serving as a standard to verify the citizen’s English ability. Compared with the extended learning time, the test has had more immediate effects on the people’s attitude and behaviors related to learning English. GEPT changed people’s perception of English from a professional skill to a surviving skill. In the past, standardized English proficiency tests (SEPT) mainly referred to TOEFL and IELTS. These tests are function-oriented; that is, people will not take the tests unless they plan to study or live in Anglo-American countries. Today, however, people are made to believe that passing one of the tests-- preferably GEPT-- is related to their survival in this society. Passing SEPT has become a survival skill for employees
