Pesticides and Fertilizers Nowadays, we are enj oying the convenience and efficiency brought by science and technology. With the omnipotent pesticides and fertilizers, crops grow faster and become more productive. It is estimated that every year, our country suffers an economic loss of 50 billion as a result of pests. With the help of pesticides, we can retrieve a loss of 15%. Whereas, when there is sunshine, there is shadows. The negative effects of pesticides and fertilizers have become stronger and stronger. They have affected human beings indirectly and directly. In the first instance, the harmful substances which compose pesticides and fertilizers percolate through the soil and destroy the soil environment . Most of pesticides and fertilizers lack of abilities of self-decomposition and become sediment in soil. These remained pesticides kill both harmful and beneficial insects, result in soil biological simplification. In addition, these harmful substances mutate animals such as frogs and earthworms. Secondly, the harmful substances can be transferred and endanger people s health. They may j oin with rainwater and run into rivers and oceans, which does bad pollution to waters. This pollution usually goes beyond waters self-purification capacity, and lead to chemical and physical changes of waters as a result. Once people and animals drink the polluted water, they may suffer varying degrees of harm. On the other hand, these substances can be transferred through biological chain. For example, plants absorb these substances and then are eaten by sheep, so the elements of pesticides and fertilizers are transferred. If people eat these sheep, they may get various fatal disease
