* * * * Marcus Luttrell Lone Survivor BEFORE THE INTRODUCTION About The Author Marcus Luttrell, was born in Houston, Texas on November 7, 1975. He began training for the US. Navy SEALs at the age of 14, with US.Army veteran Billy Shelton, who lived near Luttrells home. Lutrell trained every day with his twin brother, Morgan, and others who aspired to join the US.Navy and other Special Operations Forces. Shelton trained them using various weight and endurance exercises. Luttrell enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March 1999, He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2005 with SEAL Team Ten and involved in Operation Red Wings, Luttrell was awarded the Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his actions in June 2005 against Taliban fighters during Operation Red Wings. INTRODUCTION ABOUT OPERATION RED WINGS Operation Red Wings, informally referred to as Battle of Abbas Ghar ,was a military operation during the War in the mountain area of Afghanistans Kunar Province, in late June through mid-July 2005. Operation Red Wings was intended to disrupt local anti-Coalition Militia activity, thus contributing to regional stability and thereby facilitating the Afghan Parliament elections scheduled for September, 2005. At the time, anti-Coalition Militia activity in the region was carried out most notably by a small group led by a local man from Nangarhar Province, Ahmad Shah, He and his small group were among the primary targets of the operation.
