Damage Type and Cause Analysis of Subgrade Engineering
in Strong Earthquake Area of the Ms8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract: Due to the lack of real observed data in strong earthquake area, in present seismic design criterion for highway and railway, there is no seismic subgrade engineering design for above seismic intensity Ⅸ zone. The Ms8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake on May 12th 2008 offers costful data to study the damage cause of subgrade engineering in strong earthquake area. Based on the detailed investigation of the subgrade earthquake damage in Wenchuan near field earthquake region, especially the Dujiangyan-Yingxiu third-grade highway which was built in 2005, the earthquake damage types and causes of embankment engineering, retaining walls in road shoulder and road cutting were summarized and analyzed. The primary results involves: the main body of high embankment with stepped slope can keep stable even in strong earthquake area and the main damage types are deformation and collapse of embankment slope; the most general damage type of retaining walls in road shoulder is lateral tilt, which is the main cause of damage, and it indicates that the effect of seismic wave on subgrade is still the horizontal force in the near field region and the increase of the stability against overturning should be the key of the earthquake resistant design for retaining wall; the most general damage type of retaining walls in road cutting is also lateral tilt.
