二元组织创新破解“亚历山大困境”论文
RESEARCH ON THE AMBIDEXTROUS
ORGANIZATION SOLVING THE ‘ALEXANDER
DILEMMA’: BASED ON THE DISRUPTIVE
INNOVATION
ABSTRACT
Year 1997, the professor Christensen of the Harvard University put
forward the theory of ‘Disruptive Innovation’ for the first time, which
provided new strategic way for latecomer firm overstepping incumbent
firm. It seems that the incumbent firm can’t breakthrough the inertia of
the organization and operation, thus into the dilemma of the short-term
benefit and long-term interest and toward failure and destruction which is
called ‘Alexander Dilemma’.
This paper demonstrates the process of the incumbent firm falling
into the ‘Alexander Dilemma’ by the cases of the semiconductor industry
and the iron and steel industry of USA, based on the prospect of the
incumbent firm. Then the paper analyses the reason of ‘Alexander
Dilemma’ from internal and external point of view by the tools of S-curve
and game theory. It illustrates that the core rigidities, path dependence
and organizational inertia of the incumbent firm restraint the innovation;
from the market point of view, by the restraint of sunk costs and high
expected profits, the innovation driven of the incumbent firm is low. Then

the incumbent firm will input less resource to the disruptive innovation
leading to its failure.
This paper points out that the ambidextrous organization would be a
useful way for the incumbent firm solving ‘Alexander Dilemma’ by the
related research on the ambidextrous organization. After the description
of the ambidextrous organization theory, this paper analyses the
innovation cases of 3M, A
