Abstract As a representative of Analytical Marxism, Jon Elster’s economic philosophy thought is valuable and significant. This paper aims to introduce and analyze Elster’s economic philosophy thought through methodological individualism, rational choice and local justice theory. The theme of this paper is Elster’s economic philosophy thought. His research field is very broad, and he put out so many wonderful works, but economic philosophy theory is always the core of his academic research. Elster especially values methodological individualism. In his works, he compared methodological individualism with methodological holism, and cleared methodological individualism adaptability to Marxism. Allied to this is rational choice, Elster has made a great contribution to this field. Beyond that, this paper also introduces and analyzes theory of local justice which is a kind of empirical study on the basis of methodological individualism and rational choice. The content of local justice is interdisciplinary and novel. It can also be considered as a part of social philosophy or political philosophy. This paper tries to make a thorough and comprehensive introduction and analysis to Elster ’s economic philosophy thought, and then partly reflects the feature and contribution of analytical Marxism. Elster’s dedication on economic philosophy is undeniable, but all theories are imperfect. Worldwide scholars’ views on Elster ’s theory are mixed, but the most important thing is economic philosophy theory has been continually improved and developed through these scholars’ ceaseless explore.
