Abstract William Butler Yeats(1865-1939), famous Irish poet, is the Nobel Prize winner in 1923 for his unique artistic features in his works and has made a far-reaching influence in the world literature. As a leader of the Irish Literary Renaissance, Yeats has made great contributions to the development of Irish culture. Yeats’ s writing career can be divided into three phases : the early period, the middle period and the late period. The early period ends with the publication of The Wind Among the Reeds in 1899. He has been through the transition from Romanticism to Modernism during which he absorbed different literary ideas and styles. In many fields of poetry creation, he has achieved a lot and remained an admired poet. So it is important to dig the initial ideas behind his early writing and study his early poetic creation. By close reading and analyzing his early poems, the author of this thesis has found that there are mainly two artistic features in Yeats ’ s early poetic creation: first, the use of Irish folklore subject; second, the use of images from nature. Firstly, with the help of John O ’ Leary, Yeats has made great efforts to study the Irish folklore in his early period. By using his imagination and adaption of the Irish mythological allusions and folk tales, Yeats makes his works closer to the society at that time. Yeats hopes to arouse the Irish people’ s memory to their own nation and recapture the harmonious and peaceful heroic past through reviving the heroes from the ancient Irish mythology such as Cuchulain, Oisin and Fergus.
