Teaching aims:
? Reading strategy: predicting information
? Enabling the Students to know about a famous explorer Howard Carter and his amazing discoveries.
? The strange deaths and different explanations about the deaths.
The gist of the passage
The passage is about a famous explorer who, with the assistance of Lord Carnarvon, led a team to Egypt and made some unexpected discoveries in tombs. It still remains a mystery how one of his discoveries led to illness and death for many of his team members.
Teaching procedures:
I. Pre-reading tasks Prediction
1. What will you think of when you read the title 揟he Curse of the mummyn”?
2. Why does the writer choose such a title here?
In order to draw your attention and arouse your interest in reading the passage.
II. 1. While-reading task 1 Scanning
1. What amazing discovery did Howard Carter make?
He found the tomb of King Tutankhamun.
2. What happened to some of Carter’s team members after the tomb was opened?
They fell ill and died.
3. Is the curse of the mummy fully explained?
No, it isn’t.
2. While-reading task 2 Skimming
