Unit Ten Text I: Keep Class 2 Under Your Thumb Text II: An Exeter School Boy Unit Ten: Objectives This lesson is intended for intensive study, where much attention is given to reading skills and writing skills. Lexical work and grammatical practice will never be left out in laying a solid foundation in English. Through studying this text the students will review the writing of narration which vividly and amusingly describes how a young, weak and inexperienced teacher fails to control a class that has frightened away a succession of substitutes for their own teachers. Cultural Background The writer: Edward Blishen (1920 - 1996), British novelist, autobiographer, writer of childrens fiction, and writer in the field of education. He has been working as an editor for the Junior Press Encyclopedia, London, since 1961. The text is an extract from one of his publications Roaring Boys (1955). Edward Blishen was a recognized expert authority on childrens literature. In 1970, he won the Carnegie Medal jointly with Leon Garfield for The God Beneath the Sea. He also compiled the acclaimed anthology, Childrens Classics to Read Aloud, published by Kingfisher. Together with his wife Nancy he compiled several anthologies for Kingfisher, including The Kingfisher Treasury of Stories for Children and the age-ranged Treasury of Stories series. Edward Blishen died in 1996. Geoffrey Chaucer (1342/43 - 1400) Writer, official and bureaucrat, the outstanding English poet before William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer is remembered as the author of Canterbury Tales(坎特伯雷故事集), which ranks as one of the greatest epic works of world literature. Chaucer made a crucial contribution to English literature in using English at a time when much court poetry was still written in Anglo-Norman or Latin.
