Abstract Rapid growt h of human po pulation and increase of human activ ities hav e ex er ted great im-
pacts on biodiversity which refers to the totality of living or ganisms, the ecolog ical complex ity in w hich
t hey occur and t he related ecolo gical processes. Biodiversit y benefits human welfare directly , as various
or ganisms are used to satisfy basic human needs, and indirectly, as diversity supports many processes es-
sential to human surviv al and progr ess. T he reduction of the Earth. s biodiv ersity has emer ged as a public
policy issue in the last couple of y ears. G rowing concern on this planetar y problem has prompted a in-
crease in studies of the subject . T he studies fall into 7 categ ories: ¹ Biodiv ersity survey, inventory and
t he establishment of information system; º mpacts of human dimensions on biodiversity; » T he role
of bio diversity in ecosystem funct ioning; ¼Bio diversity long - term monitoring; ½ mechanisms for bio-
diversity being endangered; ¾ Studies on g enetic diversity of domesticated plants and animals and their
w ild relatives; ¿
