J. Milton, for his epic Paradise Lost (1667), employed blank verse Milton’s successors, Tennyson’s “Ulysses”, followed the revolutionary awareness “beyond the utmost bound of human thought.” The 19th century poets prosified verse and established prosification of poetry, achieving universal liberty for poetry, from the bondage of the externals of the verse. Part II Genres of Poetry Genre is a French term, for a kind, a type, or a class, or a species of literature. The major classical classifications were: epic, tragedy, lyric, comedy, and satire, novel and essay. Genology, genologist Genres of poetry 1) Lyrical Poem : The term lyric signifies any fairly short, non-narrative poem presenting a speaker who expresses a state of mind or a process of thought and feeling. Two classes: folk , literary subgenres: of lyrics: aubade,(晨歌) dramatic monologue, elegy, epitaph(墓志铭), epithalamion(颂歌), love song, ode , pastoral, sonnet, and many others. 2) The Narrative Poem: A narrative poem tells a story. It is widespread in all literatures. three major subclasses of narratives: epic, metrical romance, and ballad Wordsworth and S. T. Coleridge Lyrical Ballads, the lyrical-narrative song. 3) Dramatic Poetry: By the term dramatic poetry, the critic refers to the poetic utterance in drama written in verse. Drama falls into two kinds: the performance drama and the closet drama. Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Othello, King Lear. Samson Agonistes by John Milton, Manfred by Byron, Otho the Great (1819) by John Keats, Prometheus Unbound (1820) by Shelley. 4) Other Poetical Genres Major classes include: fable, allegory, and parable poems; epistle poems; satirical poems; didactic poems; parodies; nursery rhymes; concrete poetry; found poetry and limericks.
