* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now let’ s talk about all the ways that computers help you to: keep up to date with all the papers that are being published in your field (you don’t even have to go to the library – you can access from your room or your lab) help you to do literature searches, again maybe without even going to a library help you to keep in touch with colleagues, maybe all over China, maybe even around the world * You can see DOIs in more and more journals now – not everybody understands what they are and what they do When you want to publish a paper quickly, it might be good to look for a journal that offers prepress publication We will talk a little bit about open access journals – some good points and some bad points Then LAURA will talk about some internet tools that help her to keep up to date with what is being published in various journals and to keep in touch with her colleagues and what they are thinking and discussing * If a journal is online, you can use a search engine, put in key words and find most of the published papers on a subject If the journal is open access, or your university has a subscription to the journal, you can read the papers immediately – of course, sometimes not open access OR no subscription so all you can find out is that a paper exists and MAYBE read the abstract (you still have to find a way to look at the whole paper) Subscriptions to electronic journals are usually cheaper than print journals (publisher saves money on buying paper and printing and mailing the journal. BUT some publishers still charge a lot of money for a subscription.
