Linear magnetic gears are becoming attractive in some niche areas such as electric vehicle propulsion, wind and wave power generation, since they take some distinct advantages over the mechanical gear, such as higher force density, higher efficiency, minimum acoustic noise, inherent overload protection, and freedom from maintenance etc. The finite element models of transient analysis are established to obtain the characteristics and performances of the linear magnetic gear having the tubular topology. Firstly, three run ways of the magnetic gear are defined. The analytical curves of air gap flux density and force transmission capability of the linear magnetic gear are derived. Secondly, aiming to achieve the maximum thrust force affected by a series of structural parameters, such as the length and radial thickness of the ferromagnetic pole-pieces, the thickness of permanent magnet, air gap, and armature core, the optimal values of these structural parameters are obtained. Finally, the results show that these optimal structural parameters can improve force transmission ability and force density of the linear magnetic gear. Keywords Linear magnetic gear, air
