Chapter One Introduction Chapter One Introduction This chapter presents a general introduction to Nabokov and his works, and the literary review on Nabokov and his works in Western countries and in China. In the end, it puts forth the originality of the present paper. 1.1 Vladimir Nabokov and His Works Vladimir Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg, on April 23rd, 1899. He grew up in a rich, cultured, and liberal family. Under the influence of his parents and the education he received, he became interested in butterfly and literature. When he was seventeen years old, he published a book of poems entitled La Nuit de Decembre. When the revolution broke out in Russia in 1919, his family went in exile in European countries such as Great Britain, France, Germany, etc. Later, with the money obtained by selling his mother’s jewelry, he entered Cambridge University. The exile life in Europe posed a grave threat to his Russian origin so he wrote a lot of poems and novels in Russian, such as Mashenka (Mary) (1926), Krol’,Dama,Valet (King, Queen, Knave) (1928), Zaschita Luzhina (The Defense) (1930), ‘Kamaera Obscura (Laughter in the Dark) (1933), Otchanyie (Despair) (1936) etc. Those works brought him little fame. He was only known in a limited circle of Russian exiles. During the WWII, he was forced to emigrate from Europe to the U.S. From then on, he began to try his hand at writing English novels. In 1941, his first English novel The Real Life of Sebastian Knight was published, which did not bring the author much fame. He was still an unknown writer, living on teaching at Wellesley College. Six years later, his second novel Bend Sinister was published, which did not launch his fame in America, either. However he was recommended to teach Russian literature at Cornell University, which lightened
