Although this thesis, like many others ‟, is the result of my great efforts, many
people have contributed to making it possible and completed.
First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge my indebtedness to my
supervisor, Professor Chen Zhengfa. His learnedness and scholarly introductions
ignites my curiosity about Australian literature and interest in it. I am most grateful to
him who generously offers us his abundant private library, which whets my appetite
and solidifies my determination to study Australian literature as my direction. I also
feel indebted for his patiently instructing and polishing my thesis.
I am also grateful to Prof. Hong Zengliu, Prof. Hua Quankun, Associate Prof. Qi
Tao and other teachers who have given me great enlightenment in my post-graduate

Abstract
Miles Franklin was one of the most remarkable Australian novelists and her first
and representative work, My Brilliant Career , is praised as “the first real Australian
novel”. Owing to the successful characterization of the heroine, Sybylla Melvyn, who,
different from the traditional image of women in previous literary works, is presented
before us readers as one possessing a unique character with her rebellious spirit and
her constant pursuit of independence, most critics so far focus their studies on her
character but in the traditional light, such as from the perspectives of neoclassicism,
