CED/LL Theory about the measurement of the colour December 2nd The colour classification can be made according to three criterion : The tint (colour). The brightness (luminosity). The saturation (intensity). The graphic below shows the sphere which is the representation of the colour into the space : 1 - The vertical axis shows the variation of the brightness, at the top the colour is very pale, at the bottom the colour is very dark and tends to the grey/black. 2 - The circumference of the horizontal plan shows the tint (the colour) : Angle 0° or 360° is the red colour. Angle 90° is the yellow colour. Angle 180° is the green colour. Angle 270° is the blue colour. 3 - The saturation shows the intensity of the colour, the higher the saturation coefficient the more intense the colour. The measurement of the colour can be expressed according to three parameters which represent the sphere of the colour ; it is the La*b* system : L axis is the variation of the brightness : L0 : the white index, the higher the L the whiter the colour. L0 : the black index, the higher the L the more black the colour. a* axis is the variation of the tint : from red (a*0) to green (a*0). b* axis is the variation of the tint : from yellow (b*0) to blue (b*0). Two parameters can also be expressed for a better comprehension : C* is the saturation : it is the saturation of the colour. The higher C* the more intense the tint of the colour. h is the angle around the circumference of the horizontal plan : its value expresses the colour of the coating.
