Modern Drama Chapter One American Culture and Society Jamestown (1607) Jamestown was founded on May 14, 1607, by a small group led by Captain Christopher Newport, who was hired by the London Company to transport colonists. The Puritans had come to New England for the sake of religious freedom, while Virginia had been planted mainly as a commercial venture. John Smith’s Life 1.
