Unit Six New words study enjoin 1. to direct or impose with authority and emphasis; to prohibit or forbid --- enjoin silence on sb(命令肃静) --- enjoin sb. to obey the rules --- enjoin that sth. (should) be done 2. 禁止(+from) The judge enjoined him from selling alcohol. 法官禁止他卖酒。 Note: command/ order/ bid/ enjoin/ direct/ instruct /charge: These verbs mean to issue an instruction that must be obeyed. forbid/ ban/ interdict/ prohibit/ proscribe: The central meaning shared by these verbs is to refuse to allow. ordain ordain: to order by virtue of superior authority; to prearrange unalterably; destine --- what the law ordains… 法律所规定的内容 ---The judge ordained that he should pay the debts. 法院判决由他偿还债务。 --- He was an ordained priest. 他被委任为牧师。 relinquish relinquish: give up; let go. --- relinquish a claim / bad habits/hope --- The small dogs relinquished their bone to the big dog. ( - sth. to将某物让给别人) relinquish, yield, resign, abandon, surrender These verbs have in common the sense of letting something go or giving something up. Relinquish, the least specific, sometimes connotes unwillingness or regret: ---cant bear to relinquish the idea. 不能忍受放弃这个主意。 clench clench (clinch): to close tightly --- clench ones teeth --- clenched my fingers/fists in anger. to grasp or grip tightly --- clenched the steering wheel(方向盘) wane to decrease gradually in size, amount, intensity, or degree; decline. ---His strength (reputation) is waning. ---The day is waning. 近黄昏了。 hospitalize To place in a hospital for treatment, care, or observation --- He hospitalizes patients for minor ailments. --- He was hospitalized following a severe accident. relish v. enjoy; get pleasure out of ---I would relish a lobster and a bottle of wine. ---She wont relish having to get up before dawn to catch that train. 她不喜欢黎明前起床赶那班火车。 n.
