Research Progress on Chemical Composition and Pharmacological Effect of Litsea Coreana

Abstract: Litsea coreana, which is also known as Hawk tea, is a wild tree that grows widely and abundantly in China. It can mainly be found in more than ten provinces, including Hainan, Guangdong, Sichuan and Yunnan. It can relieve summer heat, help digestion and diuresis, and have many other effects. As a result, it has been adopted as a kind of drink for many centuries. However, the small number of researches on its safety and composition limit its further utilization in medicine. This paper provides scientific guide for further development and usage by systemically reviewing the chemical composition and pharmacological effect of Litsea Coreana.

As a herbal tea of minorities in Southern China for many centuries, Hawk tea is described as having the effect of relieving cough, sputum, asthma, the summer heat and thirst in Compendium of Materia Medica.
