PalinLeak: MSNBC, Mother Jones, ProPublica to publish 24,199 pages of Palin emails
Sarah Palins war against the Lamestream Media, reignited this week by her bus tour, is about to heat up even more--when thousands of her emails are made public.
Mother Jones, MSNBC.com and ProPublica are set to publish, in a searchable archive, more than 24,000 pages of emails from Palins time as Alaska governor.
The emails will be released by the state of Alaska, the result of a request filed in 2008 by David Corn, Mother Jones Washington bureau chief, and other news organizations under the states open records law.
The state told Corn in a letter this week that it would release the emails within the next week or so.
Here comes some real summer reading, Corn wrote of the forthcoming public database. Any reader who wants to sit in a cozy chair with an iPad or laptop and spend hours upon hours absorbing Palins e-correspondence—looking for missed nuggets or merely seeking further insight into Palins governorship—will be able to do so.
It will be interesting to see how other media organizations, particularly Fox News, which employs Palin as an on-air contributor, choose to cover the documents.
But not all the emails from Palins abbreviated term as governor will be made public. The state told Corn theyd withheld and redacted some records that are responsive to your request.
According to Corn, 24,199 pages of 26,552 total will be released. This suggests that state of Alaska is withholding 2,353 pages, he wrote. And because Palin used a personal email account for many of her official communications—perhaps improperly—this new trove will not be comprehensive.
He went on to suggest that By using a personal account for official business, Palin was able to evade, in part, the open records rules of her state.
Its surprising, however, that the state is releasing any of Palins correspondence at all. As Corn noted, in 2008 the state refused to turn over 1,100 emails from two Palin aides in response
