Abstract Thomas Hardy is an English poet, playwright and novelist. Hardy’s modernist consciousness in these novels proves he is a modernist. Key words: Thomas Hardy, Jude, modernity, theme, technique I.Introduction Thomas Hardy was a great writer that bestrode two centuries. He was regarded as one of the most outstanding English writers and poets during his lifetime. In him we saw the influence from both the past and the modern. As some people put it, he was intellectually advanced and emotionally traditional .And with those traditional characters, he was always sympathetic. On the other hand, the immense impact of scientific discoveries and modern philosophic thoughts upon the man is quite obvious, too. He read Darwin’s the origin of species and accepted the ideals of survival of the fittest. He was also influenced by Spencer’s The First Principle, which led him to th
