JaneAusten简奥斯汀概要
1.Verbal irony It is a disparity of expression and intention: when a speaker says one thing but means another, or when a literal meaning is contrary to its intended effect. An example of this is when someone says Oh, thats beautiful, when what they mean (probably conveyed by their tone) is they find that quite ugly. 1.Verbal Irony example: as hard as putty( 油灰) as funny as cancer as clear as mud as pleasant as root canal treatment as sharp as a marble 2. Dramatic irony It is a disparity of awareness between actor and observer: when words and actions possess a significance that the listener or audience understands, but the speaker or character does not, for example when a character says to another Ill see you tomorrow! when the audience (but not the character) knows that the character will die before morning. 2. Dramatic Irony Example In Romeo and Juliet, the other characters in the cast think Juliet is dead, but the audience knows she only took a sleeping potion. 3.Situational irony It is the disparity of intention and result: when the result of an action is contrary to the desired or expected effect. Being shot with ones own gun, or hoist with ones own petard are popular formulations of the basic idea of situational irony. 3. Situational Irony example: For example, if the president of Microsoft, Bill Gates, were to win a contest whose grand prize was a computer system, the irony would be situational because such a circumstance would appear ridiculous or funny for a number of reasons. Bill Gates doesnt need a computer, he runs the worlds largest software company, and hes filthy rich, so winning a computer seems silly and ironic. differences Verbal irony is distinguished from situational irony and dramatic irony in that it is produced intentionally by speakers. situational irony is when irony is present in ones actions and appearance.. verbal irony involves figure of speech. Satire Uses elements of Satire to ridicule or expose behaviors, manners, flaws,
