I. Notes and Messages
1. Introduction
Notes and messages are simple and convenient ways for communication. They do not require much time and effort. They do not have a strict and formal format for one to follow. Sometimes they can be as short as a single sentence. Anyone who is clear about the subject, audience, purpose can dash off a note or a message in a short time.
2. Pretest Explanation
2-1 Pretest
Read the following notes or messages and then answer the following questions.
Monday 24th, 9:00 A.M.
Dear Lily,
Please remember:
1. Attend sales meeting—10 oclock
2. Have lunch with Terry and me.

The following is a note containing the same message but in a different form.
Monday 24th , 9:00 A. M.
Lily,
The secretary to the Director called at 9:00 to remind you of the 10 oclock sale meeting at Room 324.
P.S.
Do remember our appointment. Terry and I will be expecting you at the company cafe at 12 oclock sharp.

(1) A note or a message usually contains the date, to whom one writes and the purpose of writing.
(2) Since a note or a message is jotted down quickly to inform, the essence should be clarity. Therefore, sentences are usually short and the language simple.
(3) The above is a note from Alice to remind Lily of the 10 oclock meeting and the 12 oclock lunch appointment.
3. Guidelines for Writing Notes and Messages
A note or a message is something like a short letter in form and should contain the following elements:
(1) The date: the time when one writes the note or message.
(2) The salutation: the receiver of the note or message.
(3) The body: the content of the note or message.
(4) The signature; the name of the person who writes the note or message.
A good note or message meets two criteria:
