Student Learning: some concepts and approaches Workshop notes Teaching and Learning Development Unit Conceptions of Learning S?lj? (1979) classified different people’s conceptions of ‘learning’; into five categories: Learning as a quantitative increase in knowledge. Learning is acquiring information or “knowing a lot” Learning as memorising. Learning is storing information that can be reproduced. Learning as acquiring facts, skills and methods that can be retained and used as necessary Learning as making sense or abstracting meaning. Learning involves relating parts of the subject matter to each other and to the real world. Learning as interpreting and understanding reality in a different way. Learning involves comprehending the world by re-interpreting knowledge. Learning Styles Traditionally learning styles have been considered as a part of an individual’s personality and therefore almost ‘fixed’. Increasingly they are seen as something which can be modified and changed, although they may be habituated and hard to alter. Using learning style questionnaires with students can be problematic if they conceptualise themselves as a fixed type of learner who cannot learn in certain situations. They can be useful to raise self-awareness of learners but do need proper support and feedback to maximise their use and avoid some of their pitfalls. There are lots of different learning style models, some of the more robust are: Honey and Mumford Activist Reflector Theorist Pragmatist Note: this questionnaire is copyrighted and those rights are actively enforced.
